Shiny Things week of Dec 10-16, 2017

I haven’t been regular on my blog for quite a while, so I’m hoping to change that.

What’s distracting me this week.

Netflix: I’ve been getting notifications about all the cool and awesome shows coming this month and I haven’t even watched the second season of Stranger Things or The Punisher yet!
On my radar Trollhunters (Yes, it’s a cartoon, but I watch Anime and Disney movies, so it’s right up my alley), Ash v. Evil Dead, and the Magician season 2 just to name a few.

Ice Skating: I’m a cord cutter, but with the Winter Olympics coming up, I’ve got my antenna all set up so I can watch NBC. I was disappointed with the short coverage of the Grande Prix Final, but happy to see it at all. I’m excited to watch the National Championships in January!

My dogs: Lali the vizsla is always distracting as she is a Velcro dog and has a very loud bark, but she’s soft and sweet and huggable. I’m worried about Ranger the basenji tho’. He seems to be losing weight, despite acting normal in every way, so I have a vet visit schedule for Tuesday.

Christmas: My daughter is sure there’s a competition going on in the neighborhood for most decorations (one we are losing) She lead the charge to add more lights and another couple projectors and claims we might have made third place. (There are 17 houses in our neighborhood) Personally, I think we’re maybe 5th, but I won’t burst, her bubble.
She also has a concert Wednesday night which her school is charging admission for. This is supposed to be in lieu of a fundraiser and since “fundraiser” is the “f” word to me, I guess I’m okay with it.😀

My release: December 13 marks my seventh release for Soul Mate!
The Dragon’s Flame is Book 5 in the ch8era Chronicles series.
Each book stands alone (although reading in order enhances the experience) and I hope this latest in the series will please my readers!

My daughter born the last time the bucks won the championship.

My daughter born the last time the bucks won the championship.

Shiny Things 1/13/2015

Things distracting me this week–

Congratulations, Ohio State Buckeyes on winning a true National Championship!

I’m not really a football fan, but the Buckeyes are special to me for more than just geographical reasons (I live in a suburb of Columbus).

The last time the Buckeyes won a National Championship was the 2002 season. I remember it very well, because I was in the hospital having my first child.

(Warning labor story) she wasn’t due until February 6th, so it was quite a surprise when my water broke on January 3rd! I’d just been to the doctor the day before and been told everything seemed fine for her original delivery date, for goodness sake! But at seven am it happened. Because it happened so early, I acted like a total moron. (Me: It can’t be my water! It’s too early! DH: Call the doctor. Me(the moron): but no one will be there yet!) I finally got my brain together, called and was told to come to the hospital, back then it was called the Ohio State Medical Center, or OSUMC.

Skipping ahead, I am not a hero and was soon drugged up and attached to so many devices I told my sister over the phone that I felt like a Borg. Twelve hours later, around ten, the serious work began, but no luck. Meanwhile, OSU was busy playing in the Tostidos Fiesta Bowl.

I swear to this day, my doctors dragged their feet getting the OR ready so they could finish watching the game. My proof? At one in the morning my daughter was delivered and as the OB handed her over he said (and we have this on DVD), “and by the way, OSU won.”

So when you say, O-H and my kids return I-O, they come by it honestly.

Anybody else have kids born on “special occasions?”

Other things–

(Warning excessive whining) I’ve been fighting a cold/sinus attack from Hell/migraine since Saturday, so my edits for my New YA Fantasy Romance are going very slowly. Part of me says, “come on, push through you wimp!” But the other professional writer part says, “you’ll start to skim and miss things.”

Have you seen that commercial where the guy opens the door and says, “I’m really sorry, I’m going to have to call in sick tomorrow and he’s talking to a baby in a crib?” I feel the same way about edits, unfortunately, NyQuil (or any number of drugs) hasn’t made any difference.

My tree is still up. Yes, it’s artificial. You don’t have to picture a pathetic stick, dropping needles all over my hardwood floor. We always keep our tree up until after my daughter’s birthday, but I’m pleading edits. I have a history, though of getting it down late. One year, it was still up when my Mom came to visit in February (she’s never let me forget it!) Still, as I get older I’m trying to do better.

What’s the latest you’ve had yours up?

Wish me luck!

Our tree this year.

Our tree this year.

Things distracting me today, December 18th 2014

1. A serious message from the Authors of Soul Mate Publishing http://youtu.be/xDsabUwY_vE #kindle #books I worked hard on this homemade video. I hope you’ll take a gander! This video sucked away about ten hours of writing time What non-writing/work projects are sucking up your time?
2. Still Christmas shopping. I started early, but when I looked to see what I had it wasn’t as much as I thought. Going into panic shopping mode. This is difficult as I am the queen of indecision! How’s your shopping going? This is the first year I’ve shopped this far from Christmas. It was supposed to relax me, and make Christmas easy, but so far no dice.
3. I’ve got my latest hero and heroine inches from the clinch and every time I sit (or walk) down to seal the deal, I suddenly find something more important to do, like laundry.
Hope you’re enjoying the season!

The clock of nations Midtown Plaza mall circa 1960

The clock of nations Midtown Plaza mall circa 1960

Shiny things December 17th

Things that are distracting me, today.

1. Old-time Pottery: I love this store! Especially at the holidays. So many glittery, neat, little chachkis<sp> so little time! Have I mentioned I like shiny things? It’s a bit far, so I only make the trek (fifteen whole minutes!) a few times a year. Do you have a favorite store for holiday time?

2. Nostalgia: As I was thinking about Old-time Pottery, I started thinking about where we went at Christmas when I was a child, and I remembered Mid-town plaza mall in downtown Rochester. It was a wonderland! Even ordinary department stores had a little section like a fun house, but you walked along and saw holiday tableaux. And near Santa was the clock–the Clock of Nations. Each little door would open and show children dressed in the clothes of their native land. And all around that, the most enchanting thing of all, a miniature monorail that circled the clock big enough for children to ride! It was the highlight of my year.

3. Birthdays: My kids’ birthdays are one week before and one week after Christmas, so I’m all about the cake, ’bout the cake, ’bout the cake, right now. And presents, too. What do you get the children who have everything, twice? Oy vey!
What’s distracting you these days? Got some memories to share?

Happy Holidays!

Karin

In memory of Sky and Banner, our basenjis who await us in heaven.
If they’re not there, I’m not going!

Christmas isn’t like it used to be, for one, both my kids have birthdays on either side of the holiday. I’m responsible for all the trials and tribulations of buying presents and everything associated with spending the holiday at my parents’ house in NYS. (Including the worry of travelling through Erie and Buffalo on the way!)

But I still love Christmas. I love the lights, the food, the festive music, and even the cold (Sorry, Aussies. No matter what you tell yourself, Christmas isn’t the same without snow. 😉 )

Today I got thinking about my childhood and some of the things I loved best back then (besides waking up on Christmas morning to a family room over-flowing with presents.).

I loved the old black and white movie THE MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS. When I was little it was played right around Thanksgiving and signaled the start of the season. We had a channel called PIX back then, that came from NYC (despite the fact we were 5 hours’ drive from NYC). Every Christmas, PIX would have kids call in and play this game, where they had to say PIX when it appeared on the screen and then they would win something. I couldn’t take part being too far away, but the idea of calling in and winning something made me watch these kids say “PIX, PIX, PIX” as if my life depended on it.

My favorite holiday song was, “Do You Hear What I hear?.”

My favorite activity was making (and eating) cut-out cookies. We had all the colors and would try to make the angels, and Santas, boots, and reindeer look like their namesakes. (Now, I confess, I just frost everything white and put colored sprinkles on them.)

There was bad stuff, too. Our church had real evergreen boughs that almost always triggered a horrible asthma attack in me. No one ever knew what to get me for Christmas because I always asked for the same thing—a dog. (See horrible asthma attacks above) There were occasional fights, etc, but when I look back, it’s the good stuff I remember.

How about you? What were your favorite childhood Christmas activities, memories, songs, gifts? (Aussies, you can even mention the sand in your teeth. I was just kidding about the snow thing.)

Of course, being grown up does have its perks. I finally got that dog (or four. Though not all at the same time)

Merry Christmas!

Ethan Mara, brother Chimera 2 ENTITY MINE

Ethan Mara, brother Chimera 2 ENTITY

In honor of the holidays here are four “bites,” five-ish line hors d’oeuvres to whet your appetite for the meal.
This excerpt is from my Paranormal Romance. BLOOD AND KISSES out now.
The heroine, Thalia, is walking down a dark street with a serial killer on the loose. This is her first meeting with the hero, Gideon, an ancient vampire.
The two-legged kick landed hard, and the figure, a man by his outline, went down easily.
Too easily. Took her with him. For a moment, the air was knocked out of her, but she sucked in
a breath, straddling his hips and raising her stake high to drive it into his heart.

“I would have gone for ‘Hello, how are you?’ but you’re the witches’ Champion not me.”

For those who like shifters, this appetizer is from my Paranormal Romance IN LIKE A LION, the first book in The Chimera Chronicles series.

This is the first time the heroine, Anjali, a research scientist, meets the hero, Jake Finn, her subject and reputed killer.

He looked up when she stopped before him. His hair parted and she could see one of his eyes.
She swallowed. The Group’s records called them brown, but they were closer to golden, almost yellow, like an eagle or a lion, with a dark, nearly black rim. And there was an intensity there, a feeling of leashed menace that rippled through her like a shockwave.

But the expression in his eyes bore no resemblance to the dead emptiness she’d seen in pictures of other killers. Instead they held the raw power of a predator, the impotent
rage of a captive animal.

Here in this “bite” from ENTITY MINE, a Paranormal Romance (shifters). It’s book 2, but can be a stand alone. Ethan, the hero, is a shifter who is unknowingly trapped between forms and not knowing what he is, believes himself a ghost…

Insane in life. Insane in death. The visceral pain in his gut drew his thoughts away from his mental state. Or maybe this all was a figment of his imagination. Maybe he only dreamed he walked the Earth. Maybe this was hell.

After months of this tortuous, aimless existence, he
started to think so.

Second helpings from ENTITY MINE

Devon Daughtry, Psychic Medium for hire.

He rocked back on his heels. A bitter laugh rocked his shoulders and echoed in his ears as it rumbled out full-formed. He’d never believed in anything woo-woo. Never believed in ghosts and, Lord knew, he’d stood at the head of the line of those who thought the people who took advantage of the brokenhearted were the lowest of the low, and yet this
woman, who, in life, he would have dismissed as little more than a con artist, now represented his best chance to peel back the truth about his death.

I hope you enjoyed your hors d’oeuvres! Happy Holidays!

Ranger is a bad dog!

Ranger is a bad dog!

This just in:
I have purchased a Christmas present! That’s right folks. I, who usually shop on Christmas Eve, have bought a present.
Also, Ranger is a bad dog as pictured.
My kitchen is messy, but I mopped the front rooms, and I roasted all my leftover squash and zucchini so it wouldn’t go to waste.
I’m on fire people!
I think I need a nap.
What are you all up to today? Hope it’s not up to your neck in snow!

Things interesting me this week.
1. Happy New Year! I can’t believe it’s 2014! I actually made a resolution this year (normally I don’t since I figure I’ll only break it anyway).
Not being one to deny myself, this year I’m focusing not on taking things away, but adding things. I’d like to lose weight, but concentrating on that has never worked for me, so I’ve decided to add more fruits and vegetables and that’s it. I walk while I write and I do TaeKwonDo, so I hope eating better is the missing part of the puzzle. Besides, I read a study that said 20,000 new cases of cancer could be prevented if people ate just two more servings of fruits and vegetables per day. Better safe than sorry.:-)
2. We don’t take the tree down until after the girl child’s birthday party, so I thought it would be fun to share some of my favorite ornaments before it goes down. Some I think are just pretty, others remind me of people I love.

Well, my internet speed is in the toilet today, so I just posted one.:-( It’s at the bottom.

3. Www.thefussylibrarian.com I subscribed to this site as a reader and submitted as an author.  They send you emails with recommendations of books you might like. You choose the categories, even down to level of violence, sex and profanity, then they send you matches.

4. Ninja 2 Those who follow my twitter know all about my Martial Arts crush on Scott Adkins. I’ve been waiting for this release for a while and was delighted to see it on Netflix. It’s pure action. Centered on a revenge plot, there’s lots of pure fighting sans CGI. I loved it. It goes up there with  Assassination Games as my favorite of his. He fluidly switches between Japanese and a credible American accent (he’s British), all while fighting his way through bad guys galore.

What’s shiny in your life this week? Streaming anything new? Taking down the tree? New adventures on the horizon?

A new one from 2012. We all went to the store and picked one special one. It reminds me of something we did together.
