What’s distracting me this week?

The olympics were fun and in about a week and a half, it’s time for the World Figureskating championships! I hope I’ll be able to catch some of it, despite the Easter festivities. If you’re a fan, too, here’s the broadcast schedule link World championships

Figure Skating - Winter Olympics Day 8

I hope Nathan Chen has a strong performance!

On a more personal note, my poor baby basenji (ok, he’s five) has an autoimmune disease and has been sick, but after much tinkering with his meds and food, he’s now gained back three pounds!

8CF2B68A-901B-436A-B793-EC2106B6AD1D

Here’s Ranger on the bottom with my vizsla, Lali. Unfortunately, you can also see the seal on my double pane windows are shot, but oh, well.😜

In other news, I dyed my whole bathroom blue. Actually, I dyed my hair blue, but apparently I can’t be trusted with hair dye.03D34AE5-4B2E-46EC-B331-AB09EB361D24

Not the greatest picture of me, but you can sort of see the blue (and not just where I stained my hairline).

Ok, — writing. I’ve been writing a ton since the new year. I semi-finished a m/m novella (I need beta readers!) You may wonder why all of a sudden I’ve diverged from heterosexual PNR. (Or maybe you didn’t, but I’ll tell you anyway) I got big into Yaoi manga like this C856669D-D0D7-458C-B9D1-6916E3DD3AA9

And The Dragon’s Flame (now out in paperback!) trickled out of my brain at a glacial pace, so I wanted to just write for fun to get back to my old pace.

I’m planning on self-publishing the m/m and I need beta readers, so drop me an email if you’re interested. (Karin@shahs.com)

blurb: College Freshman Seiichi Seigo is at the end of his rope. Suddenly orphaned, he’s grieving and one paycheck away from homelessness. When his best friend sprains his ankle, he begs Seiichi to take over as a personal assistant for his older brother, 26 year-old prodigy director Kei Karasawa. Things seem to be looking up. Seiichi has room and board and an interesting job that allows him to stay in school. There’s only one problem. The sexy, magnetic Kei, who seems to hate him, arouses feelings Seiichi never felt for his high school girlfriends or for anyone for that matter.
Can he stop himself from falling for his new boss?

As for The Chimera Chronicles book 6, I solemnly swear I am up to no…I mean, I’ve got a little written and I will turn all my attention back to it once I get my short projects completed. Look for a sort of Beauty and the Beast theme. (But with secret underground fight rings and circuses)

How’s your week shaping up? Gonna dye your hair a weird color? How are your animals? Planning to watch the world championships? Easter preparations? I’d love to hear!

All the best!

Karin

Shiny Things week of Dec 10-16, 2017

I haven’t been regular on my blog for quite a while, so I’m hoping to change that.

What’s distracting me this week.

Netflix: I’ve been getting notifications about all the cool and awesome shows coming this month and I haven’t even watched the second season of Stranger Things or The Punisher yet!
On my radar Trollhunters (Yes, it’s a cartoon, but I watch Anime and Disney movies, so it’s right up my alley), Ash v. Evil Dead, and the Magician season 2 just to name a few.

8859F333-D63F-4ED6-A065-23B10630FBEA

Ice Skating: I’m a cord cutter, but with the Winter Olympics coming up, I’ve got my antenna all set up so I can watch NBC. I was disappointed with the short coverage of the Grande Prix Final, but happy to see it at all. I’m excited to watch the National Championships in January!

E78E9294-D77F-46ED-8E85-895F6633C895

My dogs: Lali the vizsla is always distracting as she is a Velcro dog and has a very loud bark, but she’s soft and sweet and huggable. I’m worried about Ranger the basenji tho’. He seems to be losing weight, despite acting normal in every way, so I have a vet visit schedule for Tuesday.

Christmas: My daughter is sure there’s a competition going on in the neighborhood for most decorations (one we are losing) She lead the charge to add more lights and another couple projectors and claims we might have made third place. (There are 17 houses in our neighborhood) Personally, I think we’re maybe 5th, but I won’t burst, her bubble.
She also has a concert Wednesday night which her school is charging admission for. This is supposed to be in lieu of a fundraiser and since “fundraiser” is the “f” word to me, I guess I’m okay with it.😀

My release: December 13 marks my seventh release for Soul Mate!
The Dragon’s Flame is Book 5 in the ch8era Chronicles series.
Each book stands alone (although reading in order enhances the experience) and I hope this latest in the series will please my readers!

My kids dye their Easter Eggs

My kids dye their Easter Eggs

Happy Easter! My kids are on Spring Break, so we’ve journeyed to my parents’ house in Western NY to celebrate with my family. For the past several years, we’ve had to leave on Sunday to get home for school on Monday and we’ve been celebrating on Saturday. This year, my sister couldn’t do Saturday, so we moved it to Friday. The sentiment is the same and we were lucky to have a nice sunny day for the festivities. Basically, we adults ate and drank and chatted while our children played with their cousins. Maybe it’s a mark of their getting older because for the most part everybody got along.

It was lovely, except for the blip of our vizsla deciding she had to get to something on the screened in porch (which was blocked off). Not only did she rip the screens, but she chewed up the down spout of their gutter and tore part of it off! It’s metal! Crazy

dog!

I wouldn't rip off a metal downspout! Unless of course, there was an animal smell in there...

In memory of Sky and Banner, our basenjis who await us in heaven. If they're not there, I'm not going!

In memory of Sky and Banner, our basenjis who await us in heaven.
If they’re not there, I’m not going!

Christmas isn’t like it used to be, for one, both my kids have birthdays on either side of the holiday. I’m responsible for all the trials and tribulations of buying presents and everything associated with spending the holiday at my parents’ house in NYS. (Including the worry of travelling through Erie and Buffalo on the way!)

But I still love Christmas. I love the lights, the food, the festive music, and even the cold (Sorry, Aussies. No matter what you tell yourself, Christmas isn’t the same without snow. 😉 )

Today I got thinking about my childhood and some of the things I loved best back then (besides waking up on Christmas morning to a family room over-flowing with presents.).

I loved the old black and white movie THE MARCH OF THE WOODEN SOLDIERS. When I was little it was played right around Thanksgiving and signaled the start of the season. We had a channel called PIX back then, that came from NYC (despite the fact we were 5 hours’ drive from NYC). Every Christmas, PIX would have kids call in and play this game, where they had to say PIX when it appeared on the screen and then they would win something. I couldn’t take part being too far away, but the idea of calling in and winning something made me watch these kids say “PIX, PIX, PIX” as if my life depended on it.

My favorite holiday song was, “Do You Hear What I hear?.”

My favorite activity was making (and eating) cut-out cookies. We had all the colors and would try to make the angels, and Santas, boots, and reindeer look like their namesakes. (Now, I confess, I just frost everything white and put colored sprinkles on them.)

There was bad stuff, too. Our church had real evergreen boughs that almost always triggered a horrible asthma attack in me. No one ever knew what to get me for Christmas because I always asked for the same thing—a dog. (See horrible asthma attacks above) There were occasional fights, etc, but when I look back, it’s the good stuff I remember.

How about you? What were your favorite childhood Christmas activities, memories, songs, gifts? (Aussies, you can even mention the sand in your teeth. I was just kidding about the snow thing.)

Of course, being grown up does have its perks. I finally got that dog (or four. Though not all at the same time)

Merry Christmas!

Ranger is a bad dog!

Ranger is a bad dog!

This just in:
I have purchased a Christmas present! That’s right folks. I, who usually shop on Christmas Eve, have bought a present.
Also, Ranger is a bad dog as pictured.
My kitchen is messy, but I mopped the front rooms, and I roasted all my leftover squash and zucchini so it wouldn’t go to waste.
I’m on fire people!
I think I need a nap.
What are you all up to today? Hope it’s not up to your neck in snow!

Is there a demon in her house?

Is there a demon in her house?

What scares you?

Just like humor, everybody has a different threshold for what scares them. I can watch all kinds of “reality” shows about hauntings and not get scared, but there have been times in the past when I have scared myself just by thinking about something (clips and images from things I’ve seen, like a black eyed man in A Haunting in Connecticut). I don’t watch horror movies for this reason. (I do watch Supernatural, but in that reality I can always imagine Sam and Dean will come and save me.:-) )

When I was writing ENTITY MINE I had to think about what specific things really scare me and hope my readers would feel the same (while knowing it will all be fine in the end).

Here are a couple of (I hope) scary scenes from ENTITY MINE.

Excerpt 1:
The repetitive chirp of crickets alerted Devon to the fact that the long, Western New York twilight had snuck up on her and now the entire house stood cloaked in heavy shadow. She placed the last glass in the upper cupboard nearest the foyer and closed it with a decisive click. She swept her gaze across the dark kitchen, satisfied that everything was closed and put away.

“Looks good, huh?” she said to the Honey, who lay half in the kitchen and half in the bedroom.
The dog lifted her head an inch. Her back end was in shadow, but Devon could hear the thump of her fluffy, scimitar tail whacking the carpet.

Devon smiled. “Well, maybe not good, but neat anyway.”

She groped her way to the kitchen wall, fumbling for the light switch. The bulb in the fly-specked dome overhead flared on and then winked out, killing her night vision and leaving her standing in darkness so total her eyes conjured nonexistent patterns in the inky blackness. “Damn.”

She felt behind her on the wall for the switch by the front door, and flipped it up.

The light came on, filling the small foyer and spilling into the kitchen.

She gasped, her heart rate skyrocketing. Every carefully closed cupboard door hung completely open. She swallowed. “I hope that was you, Ethan.”

But somehow she knew it wasn’t.

A black figure coalesced in the doorway to the living room then crawled toward her, exuding oily menace.

Excerpt 2:
A foul odor dragged her from sleep.
Devon blinked into the darkness, confused. How much time had passed? Had she been asleep for seconds or hours?

The smell intensified, seeming to wrap around her, sticky and pungent like dead things preserved in formaldehyde.

Honey growled, low and menacing, and Devon froze, the hairs on her arms prickling, her pulse mimicking the tempo of the drumming rain.

Her face was toward the window, but a sticky sensation of malevolence crawled over her skin, as if she’d walked through a woman-sized cobweb.

She could hear Honey pace, whining and panting.

“Devon.” A raspy voice breathed in her ear.

Adrenaline shot through her veins and rebounded in a continuous loop. All the moisture in her mouth evaporated. Her rational mind told her to turn and look, that she was
probably imagining things. No spirit she’d ever encountered had been strong enough to be active two days in a row, but terror held her glued on her side.

Finally, through sheer force of will, she wrenched onto
her back.

And found herself face-to-face with the black figure.

A scream beat against her control, but she gulped it back. She sat up and the nasty spirit vanished. Her hand rose to her collarbone. For a second, her heart slowed, marching back toward its normal beat, then something grabbed her throat, shoving her back on the bed with bruising force.

She flailed, grabbing the slippery edge of the bed for leverage, digging her nails into the mattress. Her airway constricted. She fought to suck air past the demon’s manacle-like grip and clutched the collar of choking pressure around her neck, scrabbling to get under it, but only scraped her own skin.

Honey barked, black lips drawn back to display sharp white teeth.

Barking and the sounds of her own choking reverberated in her ears, drowning out the cadence of the rain. Her vision frayed around the edges.

She gasped, to no avail, fighting to draw air, but the apparition’s punishing grip tightened.
There was nothing she could do. She heard roaring in her ears. The sound grew louder.

The inhuman spirit was too strong. Oh, my God! She was really going to die.

So what do you find scary? Are you a scaredy cat? Does your imagination get to you, the way mine has done, while sitting in your own back yard listening to the crickets and remembering clips you’ve seen of movies like Friday the Thirteenth? “Jay, jay, jay. Kill, kill, kill.”

Or do you laugh in the face of paranormal danger and watch movies like Ouija with impunity?

Am I weird? Part 5 October 7, 2014

How Weird Am I? part 5

I let my eleven year-old daughter watch America’s Next Top Model as an educational experience.

Let me ‘splain. The young models say and do things which I would hope my daughter never does. They make ignorant comments and they trash their fellow contestants.

One of the latest contestants claimed to be a witch, but made comments about doing spells to get rid of contestants, etc. I don’t have an extensive knowledge of witchcraft, but I know about the three-fold law (and pretty much every culture has some version of this) whatever you put out comes back to you three-fold. I pointed this out to my daughter. Sure enough, a few episodes later, this person got himself ejected from the show because of being violent with another contestant.

I’m also trying very hard to make my daughter understand that in life we are only competing against ourselves. Concentrating on what others are doing takes the focus off what we need to do to succeed ourselves. This shows up over and over again on ANTM.

So what do you think? Am I weird? You’ve gone off the deep-end, Karin! ANTM is just fluff!

Sort of odd: Ok, I can see your point, but I wouldn’t let my daughter watch it.

Or am I: Spot on. Shows like these offer a chance to discuss character-building with our kids!

Let me have it! Or feel free to share how you are weird (or not).

Things Ranger "says."

Things Ranger “says.”

In order to discover how weird I am. Here’s question 2.

I talk to my dogs and sometimes I answer in their “voice.”

Is this: a ten on the weird things to do scale! You are crazy, woman!

Moderately Weird: I don’t do it, but I would associate with people who did.

Totally normal: All dog owners do this! It would be weird if you didn’t!

Drop me a comment and let me know how weird (or not) I am!

Shiny things week of July 20
The things that consume me this week.
1. Teen Wolf. I love this show. The characters are great (and oh, so pretty). The conflicts are engrossing and episodes are full of moments of awesome. Thank God for summer seasons!

2. San Antonio. I’m heading to Texas to attend the Romance Writers of America National Conference. I will be signing copies of my new book ENTITY MINE at the Literacy signing, which is open to the public. Here’s the deets from the RWA website:

***At the “Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing, hundreds of romance authors meet with and sign books for fans, with the proceeds from book sales going to literacy organizations. Since 1990, RWA has raised more than $825,000 to fight illiteracy.

The 2014 “Readers for Life” Literacy Autographing will be on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the San Antonio Marriott Rivercenter Hotel in the 3rd floor ballroom.

This year, proceeds from the Literacy Autographing will benefit ProLiteracy Worldwide, Literacy Texas, Restore Education, and Each One Teach One San Antonio.

Spread the word about the Literacy Autographing!

Share the event on Facebook
Tweet about it (#RWA14)
Reply “yes” to the event on Goodreads
Questions may be e-mailed to literacy@rwa.org.***

If you’re in San Antonio, stop by the signing and see me. We can talk books, Teen Wolf or Supernatural, dogs or whatever. I usually have chocolate to share!
